Badlands

We left Mt. Rushmore area and headed to the Town of Wall and the Badlands of South Dakota. Skip had seen quite a few bumper stickers on cars stating they had been to Wall Drug, in Wall, SD) and Skip wanted to find out what this is all about.  Wall is known for Wall Drug (short version -couple bought drugstore in 1931 - with business doing badly - population of 326 -mostly farmers), wife came up with idea to offer free ice water for travelers - husband puts signs out on roadway and the rest is history, as they say). Now this little town is a big tourist attraction. Beside WallDrug, which still offers free ice water. It has grown to include a café, stores for shopping for those t-shirts, jewelry, and other stuff. The post office is across the street, as well as a Harley Davidson store.

Wall Drugstore today

Café in drugstore
There is one grocery store - as a local told us to go to the blue building two blocks up from campground.
The Badlands National Park is outside of Wall.  Millions of years ago, the area was part of a giant salt water sea. Upheaval and volcanic activity pushed the sea floor up evolving into what it is today. In 1978, Badlands National Monument was designed a national landmark, and covers approx. 244,300 acres. The Visitor Centers are very helpful. There are walkways at various viewpoints for all to enjoy and to even climb some of the rock formations.  Breathtakingly beautiful!!!!

It is about 90 degrees - all drank lots of water today!!!!!!!!!!!
